Does anyone have a list of gluten free commercial food items?   I desperately need suggestions, advice, etc on the gluten free diet.  You see I started my son on this diet about a week ago (based on the limited knowledge that I have) and I have seen such a tremendous change in his behavior.  (Oh yeah, for those of you who don’t know my son was diagnosed PDD-NOS.)

I want to keep this diet going and be as strict as possible with it because of the wonderful change that is occuring in my son.  Again if you have any information, suggestions, ideas, recipes, etc to help me I will GREATLY appreciate it.  Also are there any gluten free ice cream cones my son loves ice cream on cones.

Thanks again,

Tree

I have tons of gluten-free recipes on my site (innocentprimate.wordpress.com), as well as an information post discussing gluten-free foods – check the ‘gluten-free’ tag on the sidebar – all the recipes and the info post should come up. I don’t know if you have a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s, or even a Henry’s, but they tend to label quite well the foods/brands that are gluten-free. Interestingly enough, quite a bit of the vegan food items also tend to be gluten-free (but are always labeled as some are not). The “Barkat” brand of ice cream cones is gluten-free, but I’ve personally never tried it. Ice creams, on the other hand, that are gluten-free and super tasty are Purely Decadent, So Delicious (not the Soy Delicious, unsure of it’s GF status), Coconut Bliss…oh, they are super good – and also happen to be vegan. And if you’re not opposed to shopping online, glutenfree.com is an all GF ‘panty’ store. If for nothing else, you can peruse the brands to see what’s GF! Hope this helps!!

Hi! Check out http://www.talkaboutcuringautism.org, or some of the other links listed in my blog. Lots of places online with good GFCF recipes, and there are also yahoo groups that you can join where you will be literally deluged with ideas. It didn’t work for us (apparently my son’s in the 40% it doesn’t help) but it’s definitely worth a shot! I think everyone should try it.

There are several lists on the web, of various levels of up-to-dateness. However, you might want to invest in something like Triumph Dining’s Gluten Free Grocery Guide. (just google them) No, I don’t work for them – I just like their books. Also, depending on what grocery store you shop at, their website might have a list. For example, I’m in TN, and shop at Publix – they have a list on their site of all store brand gluten-free products – including ice cream!

Good luck! And I’m glad you are seeing a change so soon because that makes it easier to stick to it.

Hi, and first of all, relax. It will get easier. The only G. F. ice cream cones that I know about are at a Whole Foods Market, and cost about a dollar per each cone.

Web site: Celiac.com is a good start, and Delphi Forums – Celiac was most helpful to me when I first began.

Do you have a bread machine?

Hope this helps, and feel free to email.

    Best of Luck, Deb

Well, with oats, they aren’t 100% gluten-free, but they don’t have as high a gluten content as wheat products. So for those with celiac disease, they should avoid oats. For those who simply benefit from a reduced gluten intake, oats are typically tolerated fine. But for your son, I’m not familiar with PDD-NOS, so I can’t advise either way – I would say err on the side of caution, but you could always test and see how he reacts to oats (behavior, etc) like those elimination diets where you slowly add back one item at a time to see what it is that actually negatively affects you (typically done with dairy intolerance).

To make these 100% gluten-free, use another milk alternative (like almond or hemp), eliminate the oats, and use a gluten-free flour (such as buckwheat or a special GF all-purpose). Also, make sure the chocolate chips are gluten-free. If you can get your hands on vegan chocolate chips, they will most likely be gluten-free. Tropical Source makes a gluten-free chocolate chip.

Oh, and turbinado is an unrefined raw sugar – I’m sure you’ve seen ’sugar in the raw’..that’s basically turbinado sugar. It’s brown, like brown sugar, but better for you than those refined sugars. I buy mine at Whole Foods in the sugar section (they don’t carry it in bulk at my store) – but I’m sure you could find it at almost any grocery store these days. Look in the sugar aisle for Raw Turbinado Sugar or Turbinado Sugar. If you can’t find that, you could always use Sucanat sugar (again, an unrefined sugar but contains more of it’s natural molasses content than Turbinado). Agave nectar is also a really good sugar alternative in baking and cooking…

Hi Tree What a beautiful woman you are! For your question, you can go to your local grocery stores and in their health food or organics section TONS of gluten free products, mixes, flours, drinks. Really a whole lot! And of course lots of internet resource like others have mentioned.

You’ve got some great material on your site. Would you consider stopping by the Be Naturally Well site and add a link? My readers would find your routine quite inspirational I bet.
