A Day in The Life Of Tree

Sickies July 14, 2008

Hello my dear readers!  Today I am feeling under the weather.  I normally don’t get sick (colds, flu, etc) but yesterday I was hit with this horrible cold and itchy sore throat.  I thought if I drink plenty of hot tea and slept I will feel better today.  Unfortunately that wasn’t the case.  I feel horrible.  I literally choked on my own mucus numerous times today.

I’m disappointed because I might not be able to go to VBS this year at my church.  This is the first year that I will actually participate in VBS at my church also the first year that I actually helped with the planning.  I feel extremely obligated to be there tonight especially for the first night but I am battling over here.  I actually dragged myself off the couch to write this post since it feels like forever since I last wrote one.

My sweet girls are actually being very good today.  They’ve been watching Barney and Sesame Street while mommy tries to get better for tonight. Now when my big boy comes home from school I’m praying that he will take a long nap and play on the computer because as it stand right now I don’t have the strength to deal with meltdowns.

Alright I’m getting tired of typing.  So stay blessed and pray my strength.   Thank you.

CNN series “Black in America” July 9, 2008

Did you know that companies in the US have said they
would hire a white man with a felony record and no high
school education BEFORE they would hire a black man
with NO criminal record and a 4-year degree?

On Wednesday July 23, 2008 at 9:00 pm and Thursday
July 24th at 9pm, CNN will premiere a series, “Black in
America with Soledad O’Brien” and you are personally
challenged  to watch it WITH your children, especially
your sons, if you have any, uninterrupted.

The aforementioned statistics and many others will be
revealed during the series.

A friend’s sister had the privilegeof meeting with Soledad
O’Brien and actually SEEING this premier on Monday, and
what she saw brought tears to her eyes and anguish,
frustration, and a sense of helplessness to her soul.

On Wednesday the series will focus on Women and
Families and Thursday is dedicated entirely to the plight
of the Black Man in America.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE watch and internalize what
you see and hear; no matter HOW disturbing the information revealed…

What is surprising to me is that people actually say that there is no need for Affirmative Action in today’s society.  My husband has experienced this type of discrimination and was apart of a class action lawsuit againt his company (Walgreens) and they had to settle out of court because what they were doing was so apparent.  They would send minorities to dangerous neighborhoods to manage their stores and in my husband’s case (and others) would promote individuals in that same district that were not as qualified as my husband.  Caucasian managers would get the stores that were safe and had higher bonuses.  So this finding is by no means a surprise to me.  The glass ceiling is very real in the life of minorities, unfortunately.  Anyone who wants to debate this simple fact is clearly blinded.  As a Christian I have this hope that people could one day judge people by their actions, personality, motives, not simply their skin color.  Although I know this truth, as well as many other minorities, it still saddens me when I hear stories about discrimination and hatred.  Really saddens me.

Greetings!

I know yesterday I said that I was going to post pictures of my house to everyone but I really didn’t have the time yesterday because it was hubby’s birthday.   One of my gifts was a day of pampering so I ordered his favorite from the pizzeria around the corner (buffalo wings and salad) and when he came home I sneaked  him upstairs before the kids knew he was home because if they knew he was home they would want him to play with them.  So I had our bathroom deck out like a spa: tea candles, white towels and washcloth, hot bubble bath prepared, and a nice hot cup of coffee.  So while he soaked himself in the tub I kept the kids occupied so that daddy could unwind.  His pajamas was laid out for him and he was so relaxed when he came downstairs to eat.  So I said all that to say that I didn’t have time to take pics I will probably do it tomorrow the latest Saturday.

I guess I should talk about weight watchers since its my title.  So I decided after much reading and diet research to go back to weight watchers.  As it stand right now I’m not strong enough to do it on my own.  I realize that I need that accountability.  I will start documenting my weight loss weekly.  Keep me in your prayers.  Thanks

Greetings All!

I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend.  We didn’t go to any cookouts this year (unfortunately) but we had a blast at a friend’s wedding on Friday and we had a family date night yesterday. We took the kids out to their favorite restaurant and since baby girl and I were extremely tired we went home afterwards while daddy took the other two to the jungle gym.

Now I’ve been extremely tired lately (no I am not pregnant:) ) and was wondering what vitamins I should take to increase my energy.  The last few weeks have really been strange I mean I’m sleepy like first trimester sleepy.  Maybe I just need a B12 shoot or a high dose of B12. Nevertheless life goes on so I am taking it easy today because hubby will be working double/triple shifts this week in order to get his store up to par (inventory season).  So I will be busy busy busy with all three kids and I need to have energy for them (energy I really  don’t have).  If anyone has any suggestions of natural things that can boost my energy feel free to comment.  Thanks and have a blessed day!

Visit To The Dentist July 2, 2008

Today I had a dentist appointment, my first in 5 years mostly due to being pregnant.  Well my sweet husband took the morning off so that he could watch the kids for me while I go to my dentist appointment.  Sarcastically he told me to watch how HE manages the house.  He knows that I can be a little “OCD-ish” and told me that I’m always burnt out because I don’t pace myself.  Needless to say I was quite interested to see how he would manage to clean the whole house and manage the children while still finding time to take a nap.  So off I went….

I arrived at the dentist promptly at 8:45am to get my x-rays and routine cleaning.  The X-ray technician greeted me with a warm smile and was very considerate.  The hygientist on the other hand was brutal.  While checking my teeth I told her that I needed to swallow she had the audacity to tell me that I can swallow while she’s working on my mouth (while its wide open).  I kindly told her that I can’t and proceeded to close my mouth to swallow the little saliva I had in my mouth.  After about 15-20 minutes of pure torture (not really but I’m just being my dramatic self…lol) I was finally done.  The doctor came in and told me that my teeth looked great but I do have a small cavity that I need to get filled and evidently I grind my teeth at night and he wants me to wear retainers.  Ok no problem I’m thought to myself, then he dropped the bomb…”We need to pull all of your wisdom teeth because they are not growing and can’t grow anymore and are beginning to rot.”  Great… All 4…You have got to be kidding me!!!!!  Of course he wasn’t, so now my sweet husband has to take some vacation days so that his wife can get all 4 teeth pulled.  Oh well at least I will get some sleep…heehee

Back at the home front husband did it.  I walk in to see a marvelous sight.  Hubby was finishing dishes and the whole house was clean.  He bragged of course telling me how he was able to take a quick nap and still had time to clean.  I didn’t want to bust his bubble by incorporating all the other things I do such as: laundry, projects, focus cleaning, cook, run errands, crafts with kids.  He did well and he was proud of himself and I was proud of him too.  Oh yeah, what made it all special was when he rub my head and said, ” I did it because I love you and I wanted you to rest.”  How sweet is that man!

Does Buying in Bulk Really Save You Money? June 30, 2008

I’m a bulk shopper (when I can afford to be) and sometimes I wonder if I’m actually saving money when I go to Sam’s Club.  Since today is Money Saving Monday I went on a little investigation to see what others are saying about bulk shopping.  I came across this article by Matthew Pryor from Sound Mind Investing (a Christian newsletter) and here are his findings as he compared the two (bulk vs grocery store).

The idea of saving money by buying in greater quantities is also the appeal made by warehouse clubs. These huge member-only warehouses claim to offer great savings, partly due to the fact that you’re buying in bulk (and partly due to the no-frills environment). But are the savings more than offset by the fact that I may buy more than needed? And is buying in bulk really a money-saving strategy? I went on a crusade to find out!

I started my quest at Sam’s, the dominant warehouse club locally. I thoroughly enjoy walking down aisle upon giant aisle of everything from tube socks to hot sauce. I mean really, who couldn’t use a 48-bottle case of Tabasco? With apparent bargains all around, it’s hard not to love the clubs.

I decided to primarily focus my research on goods one would buy regularly from the grocery store. Though it wasn’t mandatory for the items to be food, the food items I did pick were in a quantity that would not quickly perish. So with my clipboard in hand, I wrote down the prices of 175 items at Sam’s, and then went to two of our leading grocery chains, Kroger and Meijer, and wrote down the prices for those same 175 items.

Most of the time, I was able to compare items of the same container size. In other words, if a package of four 32-ounce bottles of Mott’s Apple Juice could be purchased at Sam’s, I priced the same Mott’s Apple Juice, but in a single 32-ounce bottle from the two grocery stores. When this was not possible, I wrote down the price of a comparable size. After crunching the numbers, I found that a great majority of the items were indeed cheaper at Sam’s. On average, the savings amounted to 31%, more than enough to easily offset the $35-45 annual membership fee.

To see if there were patterns to where the savings would be found, I broke down the data into categories: baby, can goods, cereal/bread, cooking/baking, dairy, frozen, health/hygiene, household (cleansers, paper and plastic products, etc.), snacks, soup/sauce, and other (peanut butter, stuffing, salad dressing, etc.). The big winners: cereal/bread, cooking/baking, snacks, and other averaged nearly 40% savings. Still not impressed? Buy some raisins, syrup, bottled water, and sandwich bags and you can save an average of 66%.

And it doesn’t stop there. You can rack up even more savings by buying generics in bulk, where I found savings of up to 83% on items like aspirin and hand sanitizer.

So how does this translate into your daily life? It may never have crossed your mind that your child’s glass of OJ could cost you a quarter more than necessary. You shrug off a quarter? If you’re determined to get Junior’s daily dose of vitamin C in, you would be shrugging off about $90 a year.

Or, how about this—you can save 20 cents a bowl on Raisin Bran. What’s 20 cents? For a family of four that has a bowl every weekday, it’s $208 a year. That’s $208 that could be paying off a debt (and the high interest rate that comes with it).

“I don’t eat cereal,” you say. Oh no? Do you eat chicken? Do you like snacks? Do you use tooth paste? Hopefully you answered “yes” to at least one of these questions, in which case you can save an average of 38%. (And none of these examples include the additional savings on sales tax!) To take the study a step further, I compared the Sam’s price of an item to the cheapest current sales price available at the grocery chains. The warehouse club still wins, saving you 22%.

Savings aren’t necessarily limited to groceries. In his book, Saving Money Any Way You Can, Mike Yorkey cites warehouse clubs as being great places to shop for small appliances, car tires and prescription eyewear. And I personally have saved money when buying books, computer software, and even flowers for my wife. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when shopping at a wholesale club:

• Not everything at warehouse clubs is sold in bulk. You can buy a single gallon of milk or one ink jet printer. In those instances, the savings may not amount to much, so be sure to compare prices first.

• Strangely, some items cost more in bulk (and even at the grocery store, I came across a number of items that cost more per unit of measurement when bought in the bigger container).

• The variety is limited.

• I surveyed items that wouldn’t perish quickly. You’re not saving money if the product goes to waste.

• You might save some money buying items you use less often, like cat shampoo, but you’d be tying up money that would probably be better used elsewhere.

• Depending on how you categorize items, you may experience different category savings as some items could be in more than one category.

• When the grocery chains came out ahead, often times it was because there was a sale. Their advantage can disappear when the promotions end. Furthermore, keep in mind that grocery prices are regional—what’s cheaper for me in Kentucky may cost more where you live, or vice versa.

• You have to account for storage of these items.

Even still, warehouse clubs are a great place to find really good savings. But to truly win at the cost-cutting game, you’ll need to investigate the pricing patterns of the chains in your area. And you never know, you might bump into me one of these days—I’ll be the one with the clipboard and case of Tabasco. End

Financial Seminar

For the next few days I won’t be able to blog because hubby and I will be attending a 3-day financial seminar in New York City.  I would normally be excited to spend some time with hubby to discuss “grown up” stuff but the seminars are very long (9am-6pm) so there won’t be much time for conversation.  Hopefully I will learn something I can share with you, my dear reader.

Edit my posts

Please forgive my grammatical errors on past posts.  I usually type really quick and try to make changes when I can.  I hope the parents of my old students are not reading the posts. I will edit all my posts soon!  :)

I’ll see you in blogland in a few days.  Take care!

My favorite blogger, Candy from www.keepingthehome.com has created an avatar of herself on Meez.com.  I must say that it’s so much fun, almost like playing with Barbie dolls.  I created an avatar of myself and you can make one also.  Her is my Meez…Does it look like me? :)

Sorry I didn’t write a post the last couple of days but I’ve been real busy.  Ok let me catch you up on everything.

Saturday-Autism Walk -Great event, everyone had fun and my church family really came through for me as far as attendance and donations.  Wanted to blog but was so tired from the walk and literally getting 4 hours of sleep that I took a Benadryl (Oh yeah allergies flared up) and was pretty much knocked out.

Sunday- Father’s Day- Still tired from yesterday but wanted to give hubby a break.  So I really took “Charge” of the kids yesterday.  Found a babysitter at the last minute to watch the kids so I can take hubby out to dinner at his favorite restaurant, Macaroni Grill.  At the restaurant my chicken tasted funny so the kind waitress gave me a new entree but it was a little cold (I guess they didn’t heat it up thoroughly in their attempt to get my food to me quickly) so I ended up getting my chicken entree to go (because it was still deliciouso) and the waiter brought me a huge chocolate cake on the house.  I only took three small forks of the cake when I came home so that I won’t deprive myself of the goodie but kept in mind my weight loss goal.

Today-Cleaned house, spend time with girls, oh yeah I walked on the track today, jogging 2 out of the 6 laps so my dreams of jogging is becoming a reality.  It was great.  I emailed a few friends to see if they are interested in starting an organic food co-op and now I’m blogging and I’m about to give you my menu ideas for this week.  I am making roasted chicken today because I was suppose to make it yesterday but opt to take hubby out.  So below is a quick list of my menu for this week.  Please excuse any grammatical errors because I am typing quickly before I have to get my son off the bus (half day at school).

Monday- Roasted Chicken Potatoes, Veggies

Tuesday-Spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread

Wednesday-Bar-B-Q Chicken Spanish rice, veggie

Thursday- Homemade cheeseburgers, homemade fried

Friday-Grilled Chicken, Pasta Salad

Saturday- Leftovers

Sunday-Roast Beef, Mash Potatoes, Veggies
